The Holy Girl

I didn't expect to enjoy this quite as much as I did. Lucrecia Martel's murky take on the romanticization of sexuality in relation to spirituality/religion wasn't really blowing my skirt up. But what surprised me is how wonderful an examination of youth, in general, there seems to be here. And not even just youth, really. The film keeps its adults and children at a decidely even playing field, surprisingly. Mercedes MorĂ¡n is downright heartbreaking in her authenticity, as the conflict of the teenage years, sexual awakening, what have you...is all communicated in an assuredly honest, if not delightfully confused, tone. I really love this film.
